RiffSmart

The RiffSmart Program in Austin In 1990, I moved to Austin to be a part of its vibrant music community. Being a guitar player myself, Austin was a perfect fit for me. Now, 32 years later, I am giving back to the community that has played an important role in my life's journey.

The scientific literature indicates that musicians have a high rate of injury and musculoskeletal problems, with 62-93% of musicians sustaining an injury throughout their playing career. As a musician, I understand what is required to play and perform. Musicians are, in fact, athletes that are subjecting themselves to repeated movements, sustained positions, and often have poor recovery based on their practice schedules or gigs.

Given the current status of our health care system, many may not seek care due to issues related to cost or accessibility - or both. Worse yet, you may end up with a provider that doesn't understand your needs or just prescribes medication and rest - and you're expected to pay for the service upfront, regardless of whether or not it is effective or successful!

With this in mind, I am now offering pro bono physical therapy services to Austin musicians registered with HAAM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians) to give back to the Austin community. Just confirm your membership, and we will take it from there. A unique addition to these services is the provision of a community "tip jar" for donations. Do you feel the service was beneficial or successfully got you back to your music? Throw something in the tip jar!

The RiffSmart program is specifically designed to address the problems of the musician. There are several unique features to this program. The approach to care is based on the McKenzie Method, making it patient-centered and self-care-based. Sessions are scheduled either face-to-face (in-clinic) or remotely (via Zoom), providing the musician with care locally and on the road if necessary. The mechanical assessment provides the foundation for an individualized self-management plan that addresses not only a solution to the problem but also the necessary education to enhance your well-being and musical performance!

RunSmart Book

Where To Buy RunSmartUp to 60% of runners will sustain an injury within any given year. Poor running mechanics, in conjunction with poor, ineffective and outdated training methods, can pose a significant injury risk. "RunSmart" was written to address these issues in the running community.
