Doubleheader At The 2014 TPTA Annual Conference

Saturday, 25 October 2014 22:06 Written by Allan Besselink

The Galveston causewayThere are certainly worse places to visit in October in Texas. A trip to Galveston for the Texas Physical Therapy Association's Annual Conference would be a nice break from preparing Anatomy practical exams for PT students, right? A little rest and relaxation - with a side order of walking along the Gulf Coast with the ocean and sand between my toes - would be welcomed.

Hold on, come back to the real world Allan. We're here for a conference, right?

Oh yes. The conference.

2014 was the 6th consecutive year that I have been invited to present at our Annual Conference. This year was the first time that I had a doubleheader: one session for the professional track ("The Role Of Social Media In Physical Therapy"), and one for the student track ("Form Follows Function: A Framework For Anatomy").

Without further adieu, here are a few thoughts from the experience.

Happy Birthday, Ry Cooder - Slide Guitar Extraordinaire

Friday, 15 March 2013 21:45 Written by Allan Besselink

ry cooderMarch 15 is a day to rejoice and revel in the beauty of great music. Why today? Because March 15 is the birthday of one of the greatest slide guitar players the world has known - and one of the musicians who has had a great impact on my personal world.

His name is Ry Cooder. For many, that will prompt the next question: who?

Sure, I will admit, it might come across as just another obscure musical reference. That wouldn't surprise me.

But here's a little-known fact: Cooder was rated the #8 guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. He resides in the top 10 with Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, and Keith Richards. That's some impressive company.

Ry Cooder brought slide guitar front and certain in my world. He exposed me to a rich and eclectic mix of musical genres. Perhaps most importantly, he reminded me of the incredible capacity of one note to bring a person to tears, to joy, and all points in between.

CGH #044: Can MDT Save Health Care?

Episode 44 is entitled “Can MDT Save Health Care?”.

The health care system continues to rant about prevention, but little is truly being done to address the issue. The health care system continues to rant about making care patient-centered, yet puts them in a passive role from the moment they enter the medical system.

MDT, or Mechanical Diagnosis And Therapy, provides a framework not only for assessment and treatment, but also for patient-focused competent self care and prevention. Today we will explore MDT and examine how widespread adoption of its approach - from consumer to clinician - could effectively and simply solve many of health care's woes.

Spin Doctors And Debunking Myths

Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:03 Written by Allan Besselink

whirling people machineIt's all in the spin I suppose.

The headline was simple: "7 Myths About Physical Therapy". The press release from the American Physical Therapy Association was going to debunk some myths about physical therapy. How exciting, I thought.

Maybe this would set the record straight on any number of issues and misconceptions about our profession that exist in the public eye. Surely this would be a great opportunity for us to "Move Forward", yes?

And then, I read myth number one. It was, admittedly, hard for me to overlook.

CGH #043: Is It Really An Injury?

Episode 43 is entitled “Is It Really An Injury?”.

Most active people will resist the need to enter the health care system. Frankly, I wouldn't blame them at all! But this can take an acute problem and make it chronic, which then creates another set of issues. It would be very helpful to quickly assess "is this really an injury?" and then move on to the appropriate solution and pathway, be that self care strategies, further assessment, or both. How does a fitness participant know that this is something that they need to have assessed?
