Why HB 1263 Matters

Sunday, 05 April 2015 22:16 Written by Allan Besselink

State Capitol at nightIn the state of Texas, the debate is upon us once again. HB 1263 - Patient Access To Physical Therapy - is to be heard in the House Public Health Committee on April 7, 2015.

It is time to push aside the fear-driven dialogue and logical fallacies that have clouded this issue for two decades.

Here are just a few reasons why this bill is so important to the health - and liberties - of all Texans.

CGH #046: Drug Testing In Sport

Friday, 22 June 2012 17:10 Written by Allan Besselink

lectern shotThe podcast “Consumer’s Guide To Health” returned to the airwaves in January. This biweekly podcast and live stream airs on BlogTalkRadio every second Thursday at 11:00am central time. Join the discussion!

Episode 46 is entitled “Drug Testing In Sport”.

If you have any interest in sport, you have probably heard mention of drug testing. It is now front and center with the media. It could be professional sports such as the NFL or MLB, or Olympic sports such as track and field and cycling.

But are drugs always performance enhancing? Are all high level athletic performances now simply a case of the best doper wins? And should we be investing millions of dollars for the federal government to examine this?

Today’s special guest is Marshall Burt, a track coach in Austin, Texas. He is the head of the Elite Training Group Track Club. Burt has done a great deal of literature review and research on drug testing, and frankly has what may be considered some rather provocative perspectives on the drug testing world.

All previous episodes of CGH are currently available on my BlogTalkRadio channel. You can subscribe via RSS and the podcasts are also available on iTunes. The next episode will be on Thursday, June 21.

Rhubarb Report 067

Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:59 Written by Allan Besselink

Rheum rhabarbarum - RhubarbThey took me to the brink again. And once again, they left Leaf Nation hanging, uttering the phrase "maybe next season" one more time.

"They" would be the Toronto Maple Leafs, of course, who were officially eliminated from the NHL playoffs by the Boston Bruins in overtime of game 7. That wouldn't be a big deal, except that they had a two goal lead with 1:22 to play. But in fine Leafs fashion, they gave up two quick goals and went to overtime. The rest, as they say, is history.

As a Toronto newspaper so eloquently noted the next day, "The Choke's On Us". I just call them the Chicago Cubs of the NHL. 'Nuff said on that one.

There is never a lack of rhubarb upon which to report. So with that in mind, I bring you stories from the fringe - in Episode 067.

The Flow Of Running, The Flow Of Life

Friday, 27 February 2015 16:42 Written by Allan Besselink

Go With The Flow [Sign]Running has a way of bringing some of the simple things in life back into focus.

Last month, I finished my 11th 3M Half Marathon. It was a beautiful day to experience the joy of reaching another finish line. Far more important, however, are the lessons learned along the way to those finisher’s medals. You never know when those lessons will make an appearance or provide you with an epiphany of sorts.

I vividly remember one day in December, a day on which I had scheduled a routine long run in preparation for this event. I awoke to a temperature of 40 degrees and rain.

Rhubarb Report 066

Thursday, 09 May 2013 23:11 Written by Allan Besselink

Rheum rhabarbarum - RhubarbThis year is the first time since 2004 that the Toronto Maple Leafs have been a part of the NHL playoffs. They were, until last week, the owners of the league's longest post-season drought. You would also have to go back a lot of years - specifically, to 1967 - to find their last (13th) Stanley Cup win. That gives them the unenviable title of also having the NHL's longest-active championship drought. It's not easy being a Leaf's fan. Trust me on this one.

Just when hopes were high this season, the Leafs have now found themselves in a 3 - 1 deficit against the Boston Bruins. Somehow, this doesn't surprise me from the team that is now the NHL version of the Chicago Cubs. This doesn't qualify as rhubarb as much as it is a painful reality for Leafs fans worldwide.

Reality check aside, and before Leafs depression sets in once again, there is plenty of rhubarb to make you stop and ponder just what makes the world go 'round. Alas, Episode 66 of the Rhubarb Report - game on!
