Longhorns Update: Great Game, Or Was It?

Tuesday, 01 November 2011 22:03 Written by Allan Besselink

Longhorns vs Kansas 2011I guess at first glance, this weekend’s University of Texas football game was a good one. How can you complain about a final score of 43 – 0? A shutout is always a great thing.

It was a beautiful evening for a game. The temperatures are finally starting to drop a little, and this is the first time all season that I actually had to take a light jacket to the game. College football weather – at least what I would consider college football weather – is upon us.

This week’s victim was Kansas. Rumor has it that they brought a team from Lawrence, Kansas to play the Longhorns. Let’s just say it must have been 3:06 worth of despair for the Jayhawks. There was no Rock, no Chalk, and little Jayhawk. It was a far cry from the KU basketball team who, by the way, might have scored as many points as the football team if not a few more. And they only start 5 players.

Joint Mobilization And The PTA: Much Ado Over Nothing?

Tuesday, 04 December 2012 23:31 Written by Allan Besselink

355/365 - 9/28/2011It has become a hot topic in the world of physical therapy: the role of the physical therapist assistant (PTA) in joint mobilization. It appears to be a growing point of contention and divisiveness within the profession. Surprised? Not I.

Physical therapists will claim that joint mobilization requires advanced training and clinical skills that are not, nor should be, a part of PTA practice or education. I find this whole issue, and the roots to it, annoying at best. The profession once again finds itself facing an issue that drains energy from the unity and clarity of vision that our profession both needs and deserves.

Let me give you some real-world examples of why this debate has become mildly ridiculous – and how the voice of reason can return some sanity to the equation.

Thursday, 27 October 2011 22:40 Written by Allan Besselink

Rheum rhabarbarum - RhubarbA day late and a dollar short. It seems like that is how my writing schedule has gone this past week.  With a conference presentation on my platter, and a freelance article for National Masters News on deadline, my normal publication schedule went askew. There is no better time than now to get back in the zone.

This episode of the Rhubarb Report looks at intelligence, testing, and the scholar athlete. Sit down, relax, and enjoy some fresh Rhubarb!

Patient, Treat Thyself: Part II

Thursday, 29 November 2012 23:04 Written by Allan Besselink

Health FoodPart I of “Patient, Treat Thyself” addressed the role of self perception and self efficacy in a patient’s ability or desire to pursue self treatment. Some will call it non-compliance or non-adherence, but I would suggest that it is not just about a patient choosing to not carry out the treatment plan. It is oftentimes built into their self image and the self talk that winds its way through their day.

But there is another side to the coin, a significant problem faced in the clinic, the gym, and in the world around us. It’s name? The health care system itself.

The Power And Beauty Of Words On A Page

Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:37 Written by Allan Besselink

TypewriterIn my youth, I always warmed to the thought of the pen being mightier than the sword. I was a scrawny kid, so I had to use words many times to get myself out of trouble with the neighborhood bullies. There is no better way to discover the power of the right words at the right time.

I always found myself attracted to the words and speeches of the great orators. There was drama and vocal inflection, sure, but it was the words that fascinated me.

I was never much of a writer, and I probably have my share of English teachers to confirm that theory. Let’s just say that math and science were my bread and butter in school. I always loved to read (and still do), but putting my own thoughts into words proved a challenge.

Fortunately, I now see the world from the perspective of reader and writer. With that in mind, I decided that this year I would finally attend the Texas Book Festival. I thought it might prove to be a valuable experience. I wasn’t wrong.
