Unity?

Tuesday, 26 August 2008 17:24

"I did this while running for president ... oh and I did this ... and this ... and I got all of these people involved ... and I did this while running for president ...

... oh and by the way, vote for Obama (said with a rather insincere look away from the camera)...

... but make sure that you realize that I did this ... and this ... and rallied women ... and did this ... and remember what we did when Bill was president ... and did more of this while I ran for president over the past 18 months ..."

That's about how Hillary Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention sounded moments ago.

I am having a hard time understanding the concept of Democratic party unity after this one. "Unity" involves using the word "we". We will move forward under Obama. We will deal with these issues effectively. We will win the next national election. But I heard a lot of "I ... I ... I" ...

I certainly don't think it was the vote of confidence that the Democratic Party needed. And if you are apt to watch body language as I am, I didn't get the warm fuzzies watching Michelle Obama's and Joe Biden's non-verbal responses while listening to Clinton. For that matter, I think that Clinton's mannerisms were definitely not convincing to anyone, self included.

If Clinton supporters vote for McCain - well, I guess the Democratic party ideals never were that important to them in the first place. No matter how you cut it, Clinton has more in common philosophically and idealogically than McCain. All that does is make it all the more realistic to have another Republican president for another four years ... oh wait, that gives Hillary another chance to run for president in 2012 now doesn't it?

If I didn't know better, tonight was a stump speech for 2012 more so than it was a speech geared towards fostering party unity. Have the Democrats shot themselves in the foot yet again?
