CGH #050: 50 Episodes To Live A Smart Life

Saturday, 01 September 2012 09:21 Written by Allan Besselink

lectern shotThe podcast “Consumer’s Guide To Health” returned to the airwaves in January. This biweekly podcast and live stream airs on BlogTalkRadio every second Thursday at 11:00am central time. Join the discussion!

Episode 50 is entitled “50 Episodes To Live A Smart Life”.

It is hard to believe that there are now 50 episodes of Consumer's Guide To Health. Since 2009, the episodes have covered a broad scope of consumer-focused health, fitness, and health care topics. I have discussed the health care system, its limiters and its solutions. I have had some great interviews with athletes who have shared some tremendous stories and tales. The show has presented fitness-related issues, and it has presented clinical issues to the broader public awareness.

This episode recounts some of the main concepts and ideas that are underlying “Consumer’s Guide To Health”, with a few thoughts on what the future holds for the podcast.

All previous episodes of CGH are currently available on my BlogTalkRadio channel. You can subscribe via RSS and the podcasts are also available on iTunes. The next episode will be on Thursday, September 13.

Simplicity And Civility

SundownWhen life talks, listen. When a theme makes itself apparent repeatedly, take note. When the universe has something to say to you, offer it the microphone and pay attention.

Over the past few months, I would say that I have been listening to the universe and attempting to derive a message from its mutterings at that very microphone. I try to embrace the concept of “seek first to understand, then to be understood” - but sometimes, that premise can be a little unruly and difficult.

Leading The Horse: Part I

Peace There are times when certain themes present themselves in our lives, repeat themselves, and make themselves readily apparent. It is almost like the theme is mocking you - hello, here I am, pay attention to me if you dare. Sometimes, you become acutely aware of these recurrent themes, especially when they appear across several layers of your existence. However, if you pay attention, you might learn something. That’s where I am right now.

Giving Thanks 2014

IMG_20141127_104539_972Thanksgiving is upon us once again. Thanksgiving always provides us with a day to eat turkey, catch some lovely fall weather (fingers always crossed), and take in another University of Texas football game against some unspecified cross-state rival (Texas Fight Texas Fight Yeah Texas Fight).

None of my family live in Texas. They are all still in Canada, so they celebrated Thanksgiving Day in October, otherwise known as Columbus Day in the United States. I don't mind celebrating two Thanksivings, especially if doing so provides the potential for more turkey.

Thanksgiving Day is followed by Black Friday, a day of retail specials and sales. Ugh. The best part of Black Friday is that it reminds me of a great song by Steely Dan, but I digress.

But with all kidding aside, Thanksgiving is a day to Give Thanks.

Why Ask Why?

Focus I am convinced that it is one of the most powerful words in our vocabulary. Part of that stems from it serving as the foundation for inquiry and understanding. However, it can also be perceived as one of the most controversial we can utter, depending on the context in which we utter it. Trust me, I use it often, and I’ve experienced both responses. The word? Why.
